I had to fight the urge to bring this novel home from work, and am now, at this moment, fighting not to listen to the FULL audio on youtube. I've reached the car blowing up, fedora part. Not too shocked, but a bit unhappy. SK was really hitting on all cylinders here. But I ain't done yet. A lot of great characters here. But not Brady Hartsfield! I don't "love to hate him". I just hate him.

I agree about Brady Hartsfield. After you've finished reading the book, try the miniseries - I recorded it but still have a few episodes to go through. They did a good job depicting how sick that guy was.

I'm sorry Neez-anator,
machine gun me all you want ... it ain't gonna happen! I'm almost certain it would ruin the novel for me. I loved the book, which has it's problems, but the miniseries can only make them worse. Judging from the clips & pics -- the (wonderful) British actor playing Hodges -- Bill Hodges was suppose to be about 35 pounds overweight, not 135 pounds overweight! The actress playing Olivia looked well cast. And pretty enough to make her fate maybe seem even more horrible than in the book. Another reason I don't want to see it. And then Mary-Louise Parker?!! I've always liked her. I don't want to go on a full out crying jag! Deal me out!

Mary Louise Parker seemed a bit young to be cast as Hodge's love interest - I felt bad for his next door neighbour (who was closer to his age). It's the same woman who plays the Mom on Two and a Half Men.

Janie in the book was 44! She could practically be yer granny you tot! Brendan Gleeson is 63 years old. A year older than Hodges.
Holland Taylor from 2 and a half men is 106!!!! That may be a slight exaggeration. It is, actually she's 75. And here she is with her girlfriend. I'm not being factious that is her real life girlfriend. Being rich has it's privileges!

MLP certainly seems younger than her age (lucky - must have good genes or something).
I actually deleted season 2 of Mr. Mercedes - got tired of it and although I did enjoy the book, the TV series started to get a bit weird.

Oh good - I found a thread for this book!
I’m about half way through and really enjoying the story. The characters, for the most part, feel pretty believable to me. I don’t especially love any of the protagonists— I like ‘em all well enough, but I don’t feel that any one particular character “ steals the show” here— and I think that’s a good thing. Brady is a monster - one of the most disturbing characters I’ve come across in a while.
I haven’t decided if I want to watch the miniseries yet. I haven’t read any great reviews on it.

From what I recall, Anthony has been really into that series and enjoyed it. But maybe I am not recalling correctly. Hey Anthony ! Hope you are doing well! 😊

Almost 100 pages in now, and i love it. It has a lot of references from other SK works.
But what is a widder-titter ? Is widder some kind of slang for Widow ?

spideyman wolf wireman Could be widder is slangy for widow, I’ve heard it said that way. But I have never heard widder-titter before. (haven’t read Mr. Mercedes yet). Maybe give us a little context? 🙂 I bet Lady or Taco Man knows. ……got a lot going on right now. I’ll be back later. Everyone have a great day.

spideyman wolf wireman I'm not sure. I found a page where someone asked the same question and this was one of the answers
Google directed me to another extract from the story - '...She uttered a small laugh. Not a giggle, Hodges thought, but a titter. Given that her husband was dead, he supposed you could even call it a widdertitter.'
So widder = widow.

So widder = widow. Thanks wireman. Okay, we agree, that a widder is a widow.
But a widdertitter ? Is it a word created by Uncle Steve ?
Sometimes he puts words together that i've never seen or heard before. Clustermug , from UTD is such a word.

spideyman wolf wireman osnafrank-- Frank, this might help with the definition.
noun TWITTER a short, half-suppressed laugh. "there were titters from the gallery"
The word WIDDER refers back to the sentence - since dead, so she is a widow- slang widder.
SK slang word, meant as a joke.

Uncle Steve always cheers me up. He always has a line that makes me laugh, even if i'm not supposed to laugh.
Yesterday it was this one from Mr. Mercedes:
"Her arms fly straight up. Now she's simultaneously marching and signaling that the field goal is good."
That field goal thing made me laugh way harder than it should have. (It still does)
