Alas, poor Clayton! I had hoped he would simply disappear ( to reappear or not).

’Apoplexy’ is merely how the task was accomplished.😉
The exoteric almost always explains the esoteric away.
I wonder if Sanderson later related the incident to the Grand Poobah and his other Freemason brethren back at the 4 Kings Lodge, and what they might have made of it all.😊

Fun gem of a short story, that ends in a very surprising manner.
Ghost stories don’t always have to be the same, they don't
need drama, romance or horrific haunting and this story proofs it.

A story that was humorous most of the way through and then had a surprise tragic ending. Throughout the story, I thought Clayton was telling a tall tale but the ending seems to indicate otherwise. It was a very entertaining twist on the ghost story.
I laughed when Clayton asked the ghost if he was a member of the club.
Many of HG Wells' stories are tales being told by men sitting around together in a club or house.

Excellent put together story-- location, his skeptical friends, and what an ending. A good ghost story without the typical romance parts. Good characters, believable.

Very entertaining story.
No drama, romance or the terribly frightening. But you must feel a little sad, for the skinny inept shade, he is a bit tragic. 🙂
(…..while reading Clayton watching in the mirror, one thing tugged at the back of my mind - could the young ghost have known he was watching? Then came the what ifs…like maybe he isn’t as inept as he was purporting himself to be, and…..my overactive imagination was at work again.  )
