This one is a gruesome and violent horror story. It reminds me a bit of Tell Tale Heart with Egaeus' obsession with the teeth (like the obsession with the eye in Tell Tale Heart). Egaeus can not tolerate Berenice's degenerative illness although he has significant issues of his own. The ending is quite shocking. This is one of several Poe stories where someone is buried alive.

Definitely a morbid and horrify tale. The ending , even as read words, burns into one's mind's eye. That being gross enough, add that she was buried alive...... spot on Poe tale.

I’ve got a lot of reading to catch-up on in this section!😱😊
This morning I found an old favorite online. ”Petra” by Greg Bear” I read it years ago in Omni magazine. Here is a link if y’all are ever interested. (I just tried it out in the test thread, seems to work alright)….

Nice illustration for this one. Dark but beautiful .🙂
”Dicebant mihi sodales, si sepulchrum amicae visitarem, curas meas aliquantulum forelevatas.”
=
”My friends told me that if I visited the grave of a friend, my worries would be lifted a little.”
Got to read this story later.😊

Have to love EVERYTHING about Edgar’s style. I especially revel in how he paints with words. His description of his affliction, “the attentive”, sometimes had me thinking of a darker, more dangerous and horrible “Booya moon”. Yes, horrific to be buried alive. But how much more to be rescued from that, by an entranced victim not fully aware, and to have every tooth bloodily extracted. The “impress of human nails” in his hand got me too.
A great Poe tale. Thank you. 🙂

Oh dang, above I meant to say ‘the POOL’ in Booya Moon. Sorry.🙂

Another thing I love about Poe is all of his classic references from all over the place.
I’m still translating some of the French and Latin….while reading it again….
”On the Flesh of Christ," in which the paradoxical sentence "The Son of God is dead; it is credible because he is foolish; and he was buried and rose again; it is certain because it is impossible…”
(…fitting for a Good Friday read, I think. Ka. 🙂💔)
”…the noon of manhood…”, the middle of Oedipus’ answer to that minx the Sphinx and her riddle.😄
(Y’all tired of me having more time on my hands yet? 😂😘)

This morning I realized that Berenice’s being buried alive because of “a condition”, and later being unearthed, reminds me of Misery Chastain and her return.😊….onto the M.R. James story next.🙂
