That was a downer of a story but a good one.
It shows how soldiers on either side can see each other as human beings instead of enemies and how complex these feelings can be. But also, how duty and loyalty can erase those feeling of conscience. The Captain did what he felt was the right thing but couldn't live with himself because of it. It was the right thing according to the military law but not the right thing according to his conscience. The lines between right and wrong are not so clear in war.

Difficult read with a bitter ending. You summed it up well,wireman. A man who saved your life, now, in a situation where under military law must be shot. The Captain knew his military duty, but could not live with what he had to do. Bitter ending.
