The deception of appearances can ruin one's life. Mathilde's wanting of wealth and her unhappiness with her life became her downfall. Instead of being satisfied with her life, she wanted more. In doing so, she lost her beauty and struggled for years. The author gave us a "surprise" ending, however, he gave no moral comment on how Mathilde reacted. Good short story.

A sad tale with a money can't buy happiness theme. Wanting and trying to appear wealthy cost Mathilde dearly. The story shows how destructive pride can be. Also, how honesty could have saved Mathilde much misery.
