This is a mesmerizing very short story with a twist ending. The twist is revealed in a single sentence at the end. O Henry's ability to tell such an interesting tale in just a couple of pages is impressive. O Henry shows a lot of compassion for the criminal here which may have to do with him spending some time in prison.
This is a can't judge a book by it's cover kind of story too as Miss Fairchild easily believes that the nice looking man is the good guy.

O.Henry scores with a story containing mistaken identity and a twist at the end.
wireman, totally agree about some romance within the story. The irony of this is expectation versus reality. A good story indeed.
