It's a bit of an odd story and not really one of my favorite HG Wells tales but it was one of the earliest stories to be a man vs nature story that gives some credit to creatures for being intelligent. The story has an anti climatic ending which Wells did sometimes (War Of The Worlds for example). Not bad but it's HG Wells and I expect a lot better.
Great premise but not HG Wells' best story telling.

Agree it is not one of Wells best stories. And also the anti climatic ending. Calls for so much more to be told. Did have the creepy feeling of ants crawling all over the body. Descriptive, indeed. Guess this led the way to future stories with intelligence given to other than man.
