This is a very powerful Civil War tale that shows the conflict of the divided nation. The divide affects families as well as the states. Carter is forced to choose between patriotic duty and family. And even more than patriotic duty, his own life is at stake. This is a great story that shows one aspect of how devastating war is.
Bierce's description of the countryside is magnificent.

A good historical short story about the Civil War. Conflict within a nation, within a family too. Morals and ethics. Duty or family. Excellent characterization. Once again, the reader can easily envision the scenic set up. The ending was a shock though the reader could almost "see" a shock factor coming.
