Have been asked a few times, what part of England are you from? and they are surprised when I say, that I`ve never been their. It has been about 15 years of neuroplasticity of the brain to make things a lot better than what they were and it will probably keep happening till the day I die. The future short stories are partly for self promotion, partly for my rehab and partly for insight. Sometimes I question myself as to why I`m here, as there is depth and then think that I like Stephen King and I like vibrant people.

Reading and Writing
While in rehab a person I went to school with would come and visit me. The last time I had seen him was 12mths previous and said he had a job as a delivery driver in the city, I asked him at the time how he found that. I new he could not read or write and wondered how he found his way around, he said he would just pull over and ask somebody and get directions, which I found hard to get my head around, but he managed. When visiting the nurses asked him if he would like to attend classes with me, which he did, so he would come to art and exercise classes, colors and all. He gave everyone at the classes nicknames, teachers included, the art assistant was hot and he use to let her know that she was. What turned out to be the be the last visit, as he was going to Darwin and I was going to a rehab closer to home, I asked him for his address. He wrote his address out on a piece of paper and I said, you can write better than me, he told me that he had gone back to school and learnt how to read and write. 12mths after I returned home, he had a motorcycle accident and lost his leg, the rehab he went to was the the same one I was at, as it caters for vehicle accidents as well. He new the the people there and as he had to go back 12mths later and get growths removed from the amputation, he would keep me informed, the nicknames would confuse me though.

Rehab IT
Like pulling my head in, this is another memory. Was looking for some reading material, preferably a novel, but nothing really grabbed me. So was considering doing a reread and must of mentioned it to a nurse, because the next day she bought me in a copy of IT. Was a thick hardback copy, the same as I had at home, which made me very happy. Then I had just started wearing reading glasses, but was still trying to get away with not wearing them, now I have to as the words are just a blur. I must have read every line twice, placing a card under each line, helped a bit, but I am a slow reader and this was very slow. I read about 3 quarters of the book before I went home, the nurse said I could keep it, but explained I had one the same at home and returned it, that I would finish it upon returning home. Upon returning home, I watched the film of IT with Tim Curry in it and since watched 1+2 and have not finished or reread the book. Not sure why I haven`t tried to read it, but I recon it talks to me and says stay away.

Singing
At least once a week for about an hour, a women with dreadlocks, guitar and sheet music, would come and we would sing. My speech was very mechanical and the idea was to make my speech flow, singing was part of the therapy that helps make this happen. I would pick out songs that she had the sheet music too and she would play the songs on her guitar and I would try to sing them. I would pick out mainly Eagles and Led Zeppelin songs and my only audience was her, as we were in a room with a door, which was good. When we first started doing this, I did not like it very much, but as time went on, I use to look forward to it. Was helping a nurse hang out the washing and she told me her mother had just shifted in with her and the only way she could communicate was to sing everything. If she talked normally, she would get no response from her mother, so every conversation was sung and her mother would respond by singing back to her. I still think now, what it would be like to witness, if you did not know the story.

All Together
Most people that work at these places, from the gardener through to the art teacher that takes you to the movies, in his own time. Care about your wellbeing and do their best to prepare you for the rest of your life and do not know what would happen without them. The unit comprised of about a dozen patience's, all from different walks of life and all had a different experience. Some had car accidents, one who I did not hear talk at all, a person that was bashed bad and never left his bed, another that had a brain tumor removed. An Apprentice sparky that jumped over a hedge and impaled his head on a star picket, one that was self admitted and said that he would pass out, without warning, a prisoner that did not talk much about his problem, just his ride home in a helicopter upon his release from the unit. A person who at time was 24 years old who I become friendly with, as he came from a rural area and later traveled with me to a regional rehab. He said that he was captain of a football team in the grand final, he had gone for a mark, got hit in the back of the head and had a stroke. Then there was me, who did not like Brussel sprouts and still don`t, who now needs to focus on reading, exercise and clay a bit more.

Art classes
One of the art classes I attended over 4 weeks was run by a person in a wheelchair that use to paint with a sponge only and who I thought was very good. We use to paint stills, bowls of fruit, groups of bottles, etc, when he said his name, I asked if he was part of a well known entertainment family, he said he was. I am art naïve, but one thing he taught me was to not leave any white paper showing, which is something that has stuck with me. Upon returning home I read an article in a magazine about a local entertainer that had ridden a motorcycle from one end of America to the other, how he had been with his bother, when hit by a car after leaving a hotel at the age of 18. He was an artist then and still was, its just that events had taken him in another direction.

This will be my last entry in this topic for a while, memories have been kept short as my hands shake when doing things, right more than left, I use my left hand for most things now as it shakes the least. Sometimes they have a mind of their own, this is part of the reason I do not touch type, use a smart phone, play guitar or work in a trade anymore. The short stories of brain injury rehab has given me enough confidence to try something different, which won`t happen over night, but it will happen.
