I saw Doctor Sleep a couple of hours ago. The book was how I found my way over to the SKMB, because it was the first King work I had read in ages that I couldn't put down. If you liked the novel and/or The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, you will not be disappointed. Mike Flanagan delivers a lean, effective little thriller that hits all the right notes. He's made a few changes (including one rather major plot point in the book which I won't spoil here), but nothing I really care to nit-pick about. Forget the grumbling about the 2.5 hour run-time, because the story keeps the pace so well that the book is faithfully translated. The cast is nothing short of stellar: Ewan knocks it out of the park with Dan's inner torture and vulnerability, Kyleigh Curran continues the trend started by the first Conjuring where horror movies seem to attract the best child/teen actors, and Rebecca Ferguson is an absolute wicked delight as Rose the Hat. Director Flanagan, who did what I thought to be the impossible by turning Gerald's Game in to a movie (and a damn good one at that), cleverly bridges the gap between the Shining book, film, and the story of adult Danny Torrance.
Doctor Sleep ranks among my favourite of King's work over the past two decades, and I'm so happy that it turned out to be one of the best films based on the stories of my favourite author. As much as I loved It Chapter Two (even with the ending that teetered on the verge of collapse), this film surpasses it. It is definitely one of my favourite films overall of 2019.
PS: Netflix, you need to give Mike Flanagan a bunch of money to do Duma Key as a mini-series.

Super solid adaptation of Doctor Sleep. Beautifully acted and directed. Need another viewing and some time to let it percolate before I make a final call. Definitely in my top 10 Stephen King adaptations. Possibly top 5. Love how Mike Flanagan takes time to build characters. And he really knows how to not only direct but edit shots too for maximum effect. Also the sound design and score are also masterfully constructed to create the maximum amount of mood, emotion, and tension. I agree olddarth - saw it at the movie theatre on Saturday and even my husband (who has never read a Stephen King book) enjoyed it. Great movie!

Finally got to see it, really enjoyed it. I like Mike Flanagan's work so I figured it was in safe hands, I thought it was respectful towards Kubrick's The Shining, and even though it differed from the Doctor Sleep novel it had a dramatic punch that hit hard, the True Knot's horrific acts stay in the memory long after the film ends.

Finally saw Doctor Sleep last night.
I was not a huge fan of the ending in the book, nor the film. However, I thought it was very well done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie when it came out in cinema, and it's a shame it wasn't better received at the Box Office. But, marketing it as the sequel to a film that today's generation is largely unaware of (except in memes and Gifs), it was bound to have a lukewarm response. I think the studio should have re-released The Shining for a limited time in theatres before putting out Doctor Sleep.
I started watching the Director's Cut this afternoon. King fans will consider this the only version to watch, as it's a more satisfying take on the source material. Let me know what you guys think whenever you get around to it.

Not as noticeably different as, say, The Lord of the Rings extended editions. However, it does spend a little more time with the characters, eg.. you get to see more of Abra's backstory, as in the book.
I haven't watched the second half as yet, but from what I've seen I think this will be the preferred version for King fans.

Thanks Steffen, I'll look forward to seeing it, the blu-ray/dvd isn't out here yet.

[/quote] I enjoyed it but if it had come out later and not been a free extra, I wouldn't double dip for it. But its still a fun ride regardless. As for box office numbers, the marketing was shoddy at best in my opinion, think they were relying on the popularity of IT to put Doctor Sleep over, if so, that was stupid because they're two different animals, one is monster horror, the other is psych horror, sure the True Knot killed but they weren't monsters by any means in the film, they just were vampire like and the vampire genre isn't exactly booming right now, kind of obsolete at the moment. People are back on slashers again, they got plans to do reboots of Freddy, Jason, and more down the road because they do well. Some of them were planned for this past October but Covid put things on hold.

Hrmm, no subtitles on the extended cut digital wise, not sure about the blu ray. Not a big deal, prefer the theatrical but I found it a bit odd that they didn't include subs, its very rare to come across that on any film.
Just found it interesting...
Also kinda prefer the theatrical cut even though Rose does get a bit more screen time on the extended, and I like Rose, I just don't care for the actress in other films, which is odd.

Really enjoyed everything about it. I have got to get and read this book!
From what I saw, it will be a really good, deep SK read! There's got to be more.
And this movie looks like it may be one of the best SK screen adaptions, unlike it's baby-daddy "The Shining".
Great story, characters and cast, Wonderful performances all around.
The actress playing Rose the Hat did an absolutely awesome job of portraying a perfectly detestable and loathsome SK villain. ....I'd love to ram that pork pie hat right down her thoat.
Cool Easter Eggs too..."Tet Transit" on the buses....Baseball boy's "19"....and on...🙂
