Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
Oh man, this is terrible. Undoes all the great work from the previous film; introduces new characters that nobody cares about; Michael doesn't act in character; the protagonist keeps changing; sigh ... You can tell that this movie was so confused before they started shooting. Such a shame, this could have been epic.

Halloween: H20 (1998)
Jamie Lee Curtis returns to the iconic franchise that made her famous. This film is pretty good; it redeems the series from the previous terrible movies. I like the setting of the movie: the school; its very different from previous Halloween movies. Yes, there have been scenes set in schools in previous movies, but the entire movie didn't take place there like it does here. A young Josh Harnett plays Laurie's son; which is quite interesting. Michael actually returns to character. Overall, would recommend.

12. Dead Season (2015)
Zombie flick about a couple that travel to a remote island to escape the zombies but it doesn’t quite work out like that. The island has zombies and a militia type group they have to deal with. Just ok. Kind of plodding. 5/10 Why is there always a militia group in zombie movies? ...ohhhh...it's just the right thing to do when you got the resources and manly power. 😊

...don't know if this counts or not, but I did get to see "Ma" with Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, Missy Prine and Luke Evans the other night on Hulu.
It was MUCH better than what I expected. Sad and quite scary in parts. A new twist on 'at home in your own town' kind of domestic horror flick. ...I think.🙂

Why didn't they make Jamie Michael's sidekick in V? Wasn't that the logical progression from the previous movie? Could you imagine a movie where Michael and Jamie are chasing Laurie Strode, who is in turn being chased by Dr Loomis? That would be the best Halloween film ever!

11. The Vigil (2019) (FTV)
A young man who defected from the Hasidic Jewish community after an unspoken tragedy reluctantly takes on a one-night gig as a “shomer”, one who stays awake all night in a vigil over the body of a recently deceased Holocaust survivor, only to discover that the spirits are restless indeed.
As someone who has always had a certain degree of unease around dead bodies, this movie easily got under my skin and had me quite tense for the full 90 ninety minutes. It is a simple premise set almost entirely in one location, yet I was never bored. I really never wanted to take my eyes off the screen for fear of missing something hidden in the shadows. The scares range from subtle to big, and the lead does a great performance for what must have been a harrowing and emotional shoot, appearing in nearly every shot. It was truly impressive watching this character slowly unravel bit by bit at the same time we learn more about what is happening, and what has happened in his past, and that of the deceased.
Despite the very many horror films that exploit elements of Catholicism, Jewish themes have been largely unexplored, aside from silent classic Der Golem. Perhaps the Holocaust itself was horror enough. The concept of a lone overnight vigil over a dead body is an inherently creepy one, and it is hard to imagine a film doing it better than this one. Not only does this film cover refreshingly unfamiliar territory, it is not afraid to be spiritual and even life-affirming in the face of the worst things imaginable. How many other horror films can say that?

10.) The Collector (3,5/5)
Desperate for money to pay off a debt, a man targets a wealthy family's home and plans to break in and steal a valuable gem. He soon learns that he picked the wrong night to carry out his plans, for a masked madman has gotten there first, imprisoned the family, and lined the mansion with deadly traps.
A terrifying and wickedly ingenious thriller. It unfolds with big scares and highly inventive new ways to die. Tense atmosphere from start to finish, with a nice score. A great suspenseful game of cat and mouse that is delivered with a great pace.

11.) The Forest (FTV 2,5/5)
Sara Price, an American woman, travels to a forest in Japan in search of her missing twin sister. However, things change after she is confronted by demonic spirits.
Not the best but certainly not the worst. It's really slow paced, it’s the middle and ending where you really get something, and somewhat predictable. The movie relies mainly on jump scares which in my opinion aren't truly scary.

12. Beyond the Door (a.k.a. The Devil Within Her) (FTV)
A woman is pregnant with what might be the spawn of Satan, and then must fend off her own spiritual possession.
This 1974 Italian-made film unapologetically combines the plots of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, sometimes shamelessly recreating exact scenes: pea soup vomit and 180-degree head spins? Check. In fact, the film had tried to obtain the film rights to the William Peter Blatty novel, only to find that the rights had already been sold. No matter, the film was made anyway and release just two months after The Exorcist movie was a blockbuster hit. And lo and behold, Beyond The Door was a hit, making back many times its original budget.
But is it any good? Well no, not really. Characters spend a lot of time just walking alone aimlessly around the streets of San Francisco, the family features two of the most awful children characters I’ve ever seen on film, there’s a pointless wraparound story and “twist” that serves no purpose, and there’s a bizarre musical interlude featuring a man playing a flute with his nostril (this goes on for a full two and a half minutes)! And none of us needed to see the mother giving her son a protracted mouth kiss—I don’t care if her character was possessed, that’s just plain wrong.
It’s a shame because there are a few things done well here. We get an able performance by none other Nanny & The Professor’s Nanny, Juliet Mills. Seeing her shout obscenities while possessed is a bit of a shock, and she fearlessly tackles the role. There’s a very effective scene in the children’s room involving toys coming to life that predates Poltergeist (and Toy Story, for that matter). And some of the possession effects are done very well, the head-spinning in particular is really creepy. But overall, the cons outweighed the pros, forcing me to rate this one below average.

14. Hollow Man (2000)
The special effects are still magnificent 20 years later and unfortunately, the special effects are the best part of the film. The original Invisible Man was a decent guy before his transformation. Kevin Bacon’s character is a complete jerk even before his transformation, so there’s no empathy for his character. Plus, it seems that the character only wanted to become invisible so he could assault women. There’s good action and special effects but the story is hollow. 5/10

13. The Mortuary Collection (FTV)
Horror anthology where an elderly mortician relays the tales of the recently deceased to a young job applicant.
Every year I try to watch a new horror anthology because if you one segment isn’t your cup of tea, you just might like the next. This movie mostly works, with the wraparound story featuring a great performance by Highlander’s Kurgan himself, Clancy Brown as the dark-humored mortician. He was probably the best thing about the whole movie, actually, so kudos to the filmmakers for actually putting some thought into the wraparound story and making it stand out from the individual segments. I could watch a whole movie about this old guy…prequel, anyone?
The first segment barely counts (it’s the shortest) but it’s a nasty little tale about what happens if you open the medicine cabinet in someone else’s bathroom. The second segment cautions us about safe sex on campus (I liked how the fraternity Greek letters spelled “S.T.D.”) with a great gross-out ending. The third segment is perhaps the darkest humor of them all, with a man trying to murder his comatose wife and the problems keep piling up as he can’t get rid of the body—there’s a lot of blood. The fourth segment is titled “The Babysitter Murders”, that tells you pretty much all you need to know, and there’s a nasty twist that ties it all together.
Looking back, I realize that the segments cover many favorite horror genres through time: the haunted house, the 50’s monster movie, Cronenbergian body horror, a Hitchcockian murder mystery, and the slasher. A little bit of something for everyone. Yeah, this movie is sometimes cheesy and it’s not exactly A-list material, but it’s pretty enjoyable (if you’re not too easily grossed out).

Halloween (2007)
Rob Zombie's revamp of the classic horror franchise. I've always liked this movie, even though the Halloween classicists tend to go on and on about the changes Zombie made. What do they want Zombie to do? Do an exact re-make of the original? Ridiculous. Psycho did that with the remake and people criticised it for not doing anything new; Zombie does it here and he's criticised for not sticking to the original! Anyway, about the film. I really loved the changed Zombie made to Loomis; Loomis is something of a voice of reason in the original films, but here he's very crass and is out for himself. Also, Michael's much more of a force of nature type antagonist in this, he reminds me a bit of Conan the Barbarian. A lot of critics don't like the woman that plays Laurie in this, I don't really mind her. Anyway, I would certainly recommend this.

...daaaaaamn...I want to see so many of these movies everyone here is talking about! Loving it all guys, keep it coming! fushingfeef 'The Mortuary Collection' (God, I gotta love Clancy Brown!) instantly reminded me of 'The Autopsy Of Jane Doe'. I got to view that one once, and would like to see it again. Pretty good flick with Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch. osnafrank . 'The Forest'...was that set in that Japanese Forest that is infamous for suicides? Sounds like it probably would be. Some Japanese Horror films are really out there and well done, the American versions too...but DEFINITELY not all of them. Natalie Dormer...hmmm...she portrayed Anne Boleyn in Showtime's 'The Tudors', I think. She's been pretty good in the few things I've seen her in. I wouldn't mind checking that movie out too. Happy Horror Movie'ing tet-mates! halloween-smiley26 c010 applouse
