I find it hilarious how most older artists are very attuned to listening to new and different genres and actually have a diverse music taste meanwhile half their fanbase only listens to the same 4 artists over and over again. Eh, we all just have different taste and no one has superior taste, which is why the Steve Hoffman forum is so bloody amusing, they sit there for hours saying which pressing sounds better, but it all comes down to a matter of different taste, so its all wasted bandwidth and wear and tear on keyboards for nothing really. But for the record, there are plenty of rock musicians that don't like hip hop and it was actually 80's metal bands that started getting the fans to shout "rap is crap" at shows, I don't remember if it was Iron Maiden or Motley Crue, but I'm pretty sure it was one of them. The Sisters Of Mercy, who I've praised on this site before, they do a blend of progressive rock and gothic rock, they tried to do a tour with Public Enemy, the tour was a bomb, the fans of Public Enemy wanted nothing to do with the Sisters and the fans of the Sisters wanted nothing to do with Public Enemy, just the way it is.

I have no problem with different tastes, I have problem with people shutting other tastes or genres off without even giving it a try even if someone tries to politely recommend them something. It's like never going outside your house because you feel safe there with what you're used to instead of occasionally looking at something new.

Hilarious that two of the most overrated bands in existence get all judgmental over new genres. I think if you want to be a good artist you have to at least be open minded. I mean, at least don't be rude about it. As long as an artist puts legitimate effort, time, and soul into their music I don't really care whether I actually like the resulting product or not. Some people just seem to make fun of other artists or genres they haven't heard a single song or album from.

I agree about Motley Crue but not Iron Maiden. Not super crazy about their music but when it comes to seeing a live band, that band put on some of the best live shows I've ever seen. Bruce was born to be a front man, he knew how to really get the audience to work with him, and he'd have them all in sync during the chorus and just knew how to keep them on their toes, and twin lead guitars, that really gave them an edge. Lyrically they were a little silly early on but lyrics were silly in general in the 80's. And I don't think it was Iron Maiden anyways, pretty sure it was the Crue, I got the two confused because the Crue was playing with them at the show where it happened, wasn't even in the US, and the Crue I believe opened for them and Vince and Nikki always got themselves in trouble back then. Sadly, Vince is considered a HUGE celebrity in my neck of the woods because he lived here as a teen, and his illegitimate son still lives out here, he's actually "Neil Neil".

Iron Maiden is fine, out of their first 6 or so albums I cared to listen to I would only say I enjoyed 2 of them overall, the rest were just kinda mediocre with maybe a good song or two at most. Bruce is a voice I do not care for, he also kinda comes off as a bit of a proudy douche from what I've heard of him. Guy called out Rob Halford for using a teleprompter and bragged about how he memorizes the lyrics to all his songs? I don't see why using a teleprompter is such a big deal, Rob is 67 and has a lot of songs in his career to memorize if Judas Priest wants to do deep cuts, it's literally just a safety net and its better than him forgetting the lyrics mid song and having to stop and be awkward about it. The worst thing was that when asked about it, Rob said he wishes he had Bruce's memory when it came to memorizing song lyrics and that he has nothing against Bruce, only for Bruce to be a douche about it years later by bringing up how its a mortal sin apparently to not have hundreds of songs from various decades memorized to a T again.

I have heard hip-hop before, the main songs which are the mainstays of the genre, and don't care for it. Imagine if I was a hip-hop head, and I was thinking about getting into rock, what If I heard Stairway to Heaven, one of the rock mainstays, and didn't like it. Why would I check out further songs from a genre If I didn't care for one of their most heralded songs? It makes no sense.

Vince Neil gets too much hate for his live performances, especially recently. He was never a particularly gifted live singer, even in Motley's heyday. He was always much more of a studio singer than a live singer.

Tommy Lee has recorded numerous of your beloved hip-hop genre albums. Also, Nikki Sixx has written numerous songs for numerous different styles of music. He wrote songs for a band called Drowning Pool, which was a Nu Metal band, completely different from the brand of rock that Cure are known for. Also, Vince Neil is pretty well known fan of country music, he's visited the major studios in Tennessee numerous times.

Ooooooor, you can enjoy both genres without applying some kind of divide between them.

Why James Hetfield though, it could have been anyone better than James Hetfield. Plus that quote is taken out of context. I'm not going to vouch for Kanye being the most well spoken man on the planet, but the original quote was about how rap is popular today like rock and rockstars were the most popular genre once.

Hetfield wouldn't have been my first choice either, but in terms of who is the biggest rockstar at the moment? He definitely has a shout. I really question whether rock has even been the most popular genre. Sure, it did well back in the day, but rock was in no way the most successful genre back in the heyday of music. Its always been a bit of a niche thing.

That's why I prefer more specific labelling, because when someone says "I listen to rock" I assume they really don't know wtf they're talking about considering "rock" by itself can mean anything from The Beatles to Pink Floyd to Grateful Dead to Talking Heads to Creedence Clearwater Revival to Black Sabbath to Nirvana to Muse to anything and everything. Even more specific if you consider that "Metal", although largely considered at least under the rock umbrella, is also an umbrella term.

Motley Crue doesn't judge new genres. Nikki and Vince both used to bash other forms of music back when they were relevant and in competitive mode. Do some digging, Nikki used to trash the hell out of new wave and used to on about how his goal was to create music that kicked new wave in the a*s, and then he went on to rip U2 saying they were too serious and rock was supposed to be sex, drugs, and rock n' roll, not politics. Vince was the one who bashed hip hop, he just said it was crap. But you said it yourself, he likes country but that doesn't he mean he likes hip hop. The best band from that genre was Queensryche, Geoff Tate could out sing Halford with ease, and he also had the ability to get the crowd behind him like Bruce. They also wrote far more intellectual lyrics, especially on Mindcrime and Empire. Going back to the Crue, my favorite album by them, the self titled with John Corabi on vocals, it had far more of an edge than anything they did with Vince. Vince was just not a good singer. Its why Sixx AM is better for Nikki, they are a far more versatile band with a far better singer, and that gives Nikki a boost. I also can't stand Vince Neil as a perosn... but that's another story. I'm beat, cat woke me up at 3am, then I had to get my covid shot... and they make you sit there for 15 minutes after to make sure you don't pass out, I just had to take a piss so bad though, so I was like, "what are they going to do? Send the CVS police after me if I leave?."

My favorite Motel Crue album is None of Them I was always a little sad that the Axl Rose Vs. Vince Neil fight never happened, that would have been pay per view worthy. There's a lot a of good 80's hard rock and metal bands but some of them just didn't have the ability to adapt as time went by, so they ended up having to go back to having normal jobs and would do music on the side. Some adapted and are still touring, like Dokken and WASP, I mean go figure, people would mock Dokken but they're actually doing well everywhere besides the US. Music is supposed to be a form of art, and if a painter just painted the same thing over and over, that painter would be mocked and his work would eventually be worthless. Well, a lot of bands do the same album over and over, and they fail to evolve as artists, and they go down the drain, usually. The Cure always managed to do something a little different each time, but they've been gone now for 12 years, longest they've gone without an album. They're saying maybe this year something new will be released and it will be great, but time will tell. But the band has been around since the early 70's, they may have just run out of ideas.

Glam rock is one of my least favorite things to happen to music, imo. I used to like more glam rock stuff but I fell out of it once I realized how awfully uncreative and stupid a lot of it was (to me). Motle Crue, GNR, Aerosmith are all bands I wish never happened. I mean, not all music has to be fancy and some people are more for the commercialized stuff, but oh god, the fact I once liked GNR is a fact that keeps me awake on bad nights (Although I do think the individual members of the band are very talented asides from Axl Rose who's just kinda a massive cock with a nails on chalkboard voice). That is to say even if it isn't my thing there is at least some people in Glam Rock who I at least respect. Although, when I think glam rock I'm thinking of bands I don't like. I've heard people classify David Bowie and Thin Lizzy as glam rock also on the other hand though, and those are both artists I do like. Anyways, ain't this just a depressing video through and through? Feel bad for the guy
