I know what BFD is. Lol....and is that in reference to anything in particular? 😊 No , but it's something we used to say all the time. "BFD."

This week I decided to revisit Elm Street, its been awhile, and for a franchise that is very close to 40 years old, and started the same year as Terminator, they don't come off dated as some older slasher franchises.
I'd say all six films were good in their own way but I have to watch 2 more before I'll do an entirely new review of the six film series, and the New Nightmare doesn't count, it was a spin off.

Freddy is a great villain but I personally was not a fan of the first Nightmare movie. The movie is entertaining whenever he's actually doing something on screen, but I just found everything in between to be kinda boring to me. Usually the tension for when a horror antagonist isn't on screen makes good horror, but I just had no investment in NOES' characters or actual story, it isn't like Alien or Halloween where the in between scenes are really tense or interesting. I think part of it is the fact that he only is a threat to characters when they're asleep. Sure, people eventually need to sleep, but you know the characters are safe when they're awake. Kills a lot of tension to me, rather than characters being constantly at risk of danger.

Kills a lot of tension to me, rather than characters being constantly at risk of danger. They tried to "adjust" that in the second film by him using Jesse to kill teens even when they were awake, he killed numerous teens at Lisa's pool party while they were wide awake. But a lot of the fans supposedly gave New Line shiet for that direction which is why they went back to the basics and Jesse is never again. Did he die at the end of 2? Why did his parents sell the house? Its abandoned in the 4th. And did they think Jesse killed all those teens in Springwood? The funny thing about how things end, he doesn't want to be in the mortal world again, he just wants to be brought into a new town to terrorize new teens in their dreams, but his daughter brings him back to the mortal world which is how he's killed once and for all. It has a lot of flaws but I gotta give them props on his final death, makes sense that it took making him mortal again to get the job done. Craven doesn't care for Shocker that much but I think the sense of danger was better in Shocker. But Jarvis wasn't marketable like Freddy so we got one film and then poof.

I feel like the first film could've been better if it had a better script/story. I mean, the concept of Freddy as a character is already solid, and his supernatural powers allow for greatly creative horror scenes. As someone who's casually fascinated by nightmares (and dreamscapes), I do love seeing creative uses of them in horror media. I think Freddy needs to be a mix of both intimidating, creepy, but charismatic. Robert Englund is great at the charismatic angle, and the first film does an alright job at making him feel actually intimidating. But all the sequels tend to go either too goofy or too serious. I think a better Nightmare on Elm Street remake could be good. With Robert Englund still in lead, although, he's pretty old for the part at this time unfortunately. I think the guy who played Fred in the original 2010 remake got too much hate for it though, you could tell in interviews he cared a lot about his part and I don't think he's a bad actor, it was mostly the writing and directing that made the movie bad. But ah, witch hunting overenthusiastic fan mobs need a face they can pin the blame on. Scream was the better Wes Craven serial killer film, imo. Contrary to how some people treat it as entirely satire, I do find Scream to be a genuinely disturbing film at parts despite the tongue and cheek nature of it all. I mean the killer isn't some deformed hulk or supernatural force, just two teenagers. I think the actors for the original Ghostface did a great job at acting like genuinely disturbed individuals without overacting. They come off as creepy and genuinely unsettling in the way they explain their grand scheme, cold, calculated, and since violence in schools has become a topic with a much wider eye on it than ever in the past two decades, the more they seem to have in common with real school shooter type characters.

I mean the killer isn't some deformed hulk or supernatural force, just two teenagers. Scream is fun but I didn't like different Ghostfaces in all four films, i prefer the same killer. The Elm Street reboot suffered but not because of Haley, it was going back to original idea to make Freddie a kiddie diddler, that theme was overplayed on cop shows on TV, it also made Freddy unlikable, and the actors all seemed like they were trying out for a CW show and not a horror film, It was just poorly written, and directed. The Friday reboot was actually better because rather spending two hours on the mother first, they had her do her thing in the first 10-20 minutes and then have Jason take over and get his mask in the film sooner, he doesn't get the mask until the third film in the original franchise. But at the end of the day, the best slasher reboot, and I mean slasher not horror in general, Zombie's Halloween. He did his own thing, spent a good hour on showing why Michael was he mess that he was, and the casting was solid, he brought in a lot of cult classic horror actors, and the new Loomis was refreshing. He knew no one could play the serious and caring Loomis like Pleasance, so he did something totally new. The sequel however... bleh.. it had two good scenes.

It was all part of the 2000s trend to make every new horror movie so in your face and edgy and stuff. When it comes to writing villains who are abusers, especially in the sexual case, you need to do it with taste as to not disrespect or exploit the very real trauma that victims of such crimes experience. Using it as shock value and nothing else can easily be tasteless, whether intentionally or not.

Using it as shock value and nothing else can easily be tasteless, whether intentionally or not. Which is why Craven scrapped the idea of having him be a diddler, it would have just come off cheap, he was already a killer, that's enough of a reason to hunt him down. And like I said, it worked out for the best because Freddy was the first slasher to go mass merch, they wouldn't have gone mass merch if he was a diddler. I keep forgetting there was an anthology series with the Elm Street name where Freddy was the host, and then towards the end they did a few episodes with Freddy that dug into things he did in between some of the films. Halloween was supposed to be an anthology thing, which is why they did Halloween 3, Michael wasn't supposed to come back but the demand by the fans trumped Carpenter's dream. Not entirely sure how Craven feels about the reboot... Englund was just done at that point, he was sick of spending hours every day in a chair getting the makeup put on, and he said it was f'ing up his skin as well. Would he do a sequel to the original franchise at this point however? He'd probably do one more and his age is irrelevant because we wouldn't see his age due to all the makeup he'd be wearing, I mean if Arnold could still do Terminator, which he does, Englund can do Freddy. The franchises have two things in common, both started in 1984, both have six films to their name, and they are probably both over for good. Cameron wanted to do a new trilogy but the studio doesn't seem hip on another one.

As a child I really wanted a sequel to ET, I wanted him to come back and visit Elliot and have another adventure, as I got older I lost all interest in ET. But these days I do watch the film once in awhile for nostalgic reasons and it is a decent story, but I am glad they never did a sequel, would have been stupid. The story had a solid ending, Elliot came to terms with his life and learned to let go of things, and ET got to go home, wherever the hell that is? Wonder if its near where the aliens from Close Encounters live?
Jaws also came to an end but one can skip the third film, if they do they're better off, the first two are great and the 4th was kind of silly but they ended it once and for all.
Or so we think.. Speilberg doesn't usually allow his franchises to be rebooted but there is a Minority Report show, its the first time he's allowed one of his franchises to go to TV, so who knows, he may figure its cool for a Jaws show. Its not like he needs the money, the man is beyond rich and he runs Hollywood more than anyone else, if he says an actor should be blacklisted, the entire industry usually listens, and he said that about Megan Fox but Michael Bay talked him out of it so he could use her for those sh***y TMNT films which did so bad they got rid of her again.
Last I heard she has a deal with Fredricks of Hollywood and went nuts with Machine Gun Kelly.

Most of d**k's stories were brought by FOX and are now owned by Disney. Spielberg doesn't have any say in what happens to those properties, I believe.

I have this one of John Wick's car. Scary fast, powerful and big. Not crazy about where the paddle shifters are if you want to go manual instead of automatic shifting (you better hold your hands at 10 o'clock & 2 o'clock... because accidentally shifting from 7th gear down to 3rd will give you whiplash). Even the same color as Wicks'... 'Phantom Black.'
