You are good! neesy ! Turkey sounds delicious and Happy Thanksgiving to you!! I do better at working it out at the gym rather than dieting. Hearty. That's what you could call me. I'm hearty, thick and strong. Jiggly. Soft. I love dairy! and pork fat and chocolate. Plus there's always shapewear! Hi Holly
Today I am making a fresh loaf of bread, using the basic recipe (not adding any oatmeal, sesame seeds or cinnamon).
This is my machine - model 5838-33 which apparently is hard to find anymore. I always remove the dough before the cycle is over, knead it a bit, shape it into a normal size loaf (after letting it rise in a bowl one more time), then bake it in the regular oven.
Otherwise you get a strangely shaped loaf that is too crusty for my liking.
Oh yeah - if you leave it to bake in the machine you also have to dig the little paddle out of the bottom of the bread (the paddle mixes the dough) so you're left with a hole in the bottom of your loaf

Here's the latest loaf - I put a loaf of my Weight Watchers bread in the background to compare the size:
one slice of that skinny WW bread costs me one point, whereas a thin slice of any other type of bread is two points.

My late Grandma Sophia made the best white bread! I can still smell it. We would toast a slice and eat it with butter. My mom told me the other day that she would use a cup of water (cooled) from when she boiled potatoes. I wonder what the purpose of that was. Must have something to do with starch, but I can't make bread that uses yeast so I don't really know. And my mom doesn't like to bake, so she doesn't know either!

That is a beautiful loaf of bread neesy ! You are very talented at that. I need to use a thermometer and give it a try again. I don't have a bread machine though. I think I'd like kneading it. I read a trilogy that started with The Bronze Horseman. It was wonderful. Somewhere along the story, Tatiana began every day by making a loaf of bread for her family. There is even a companion cookbook for the series. It sounded like a lovely idea - a loaf of bread every day.

I did that too - only I saved the water from the potatoes we had on Monday and just made sure the temperature was around 105 to 110 degrees F (I just microwaved it). c041 There is always potato starch in the bottom of the measuring cup but I just use the water from the top - it might improve the taste as well

I wondered if anyone as ever made Stuffing Muffin Cups? Can you use any recipe that you use to stuff a turkey or is it a special recipe. Can't seem to find anything that is just stuffing. The ones I find are full of chopped fruit.

I've never heard of that. But I love stuffing/bread dressing. Good luck!

MORGAN First time I heard of it too. I guess I will just use my regular recipe and put some pecans in it to draw the extra moisture. Hope it works.

I found a great recipe for peanut butter Bundt cake; I've made it twice this month and I've been sharing slices with friends. If anyone is interested I will share it here. It's made with butter, peanut butter, coffee, and buttermilk. I have used a different icing each time. The last time I used peanut butter, buttermilk and powdered sugar which made a thick coating. The cake has a strong nutty flavor (accented by the coffee) and it is so moist that it lasts a full seven days without drying.
What cakes and pies are you guys making/buying?
Here are some cakes I am going to make over the holiday season:
Apple Spice Cake with maple cream cheese. This recipe calls for diced Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, and walnuts. Nutmeg and other spices, too, naturally.
Lemon Bundt Cake with coconut sugar coating.
Coconut Poke Cake. (With condensed milk and coconut milk poured over cake and with whipped cream on top.
Orange-Pineapple Upside-down Cake.
Pumpkin Spice Cake with cream cheese icing.

You have made some great cakes, Doc. The Lemon Bundt and the Apple Spice are favourites. I am making Sour Cream Raisin Pie it is always the first to be eaten. Making ginger cookies to take along too. Cake I am not sure about yet. Have an excellent recipe for Carrot Cake, it is more like a fruit cake and has cream cheese icing. Double Chocolate Scones for sure as well. Some things I am baking here but others are impossible to transport on a bus, so will make them there. Making Raisin Sauce and Fresh Cranberry Sauce for the ham when I get there too. Its a Spiral Ham and I just put a glaze on it of dark brown sugar and hot & spicy mustard. I was asking about the stuffing muffin cups because I want to open roast the chicken and the cavity will have lemon halves, garlic cloves and sprigs of Rosemary in it.

Hmmm, never heard of "stuffing muffin cups". Your spiral ham made my mouth water. That sounds good right now. I like to eat meat cold the next day with Ritz crackers or on a roll: rosemary chicken (like you said), or glazed ham, or turkey. Cold, though.
Thanks. I need to find a unique carrot cake recipe. You have one? I don't eat raisins, really, but I do like dried fruits...like cherries, figs, prunes, cranberries. I can dig a carrot cake with dried fruit in it. What is a raisin pie? I make a million dollar pie which has condensed milk, Cool Whip, and cream cheese mixed with pecans, mandarins, crushed pineapple, and cherries. Just add lemon juice to give it some tartness.
One of the best cookie recipes I've had was thumbprint butter cookies with plum jelly on top. It had the texture of shortbread cookies and lightly sweet. The jelly is the perfect touch.

I bought some zucchini and spices to make bread in the next week. Can't find the recipe I had from an old boss. Hope to find a decent one online.
Should have everything I need to make pumpkin bread too.

Doc Creed
Well this raisin pie I'm sure you will like (HINT: make sure the eggs are fresh and room temperature). The meringue should be at least 6 inches high. Will send recipes later today Doc. The Carrot Cake and the Sour Cream Raisin Pie.

Pumpkin Spice Cake with cream cheese icing. I'd like a copy of the Peanut Butter Bundt cake, doccreed.
I made a Hummingbird Cake for my co worker's birthday. It was my first attempt, and it turned out pretty good. It's basically a spice cake with bananas, pineapple, and pecans with cream cheese icing.
I want to make a Scotch Chocolate Cake before Halloween. It's a rich chocolate cake, with a chocolate sauce icing that you pour on the cake while it's still warm.
Pumpkin Pie Cake is the best thing since pumpkin pie, and I'll make that somewhere close to Thanksgiving.
At Christmas, I'll make my traditional Red Velvet Cake, and my Grandma's Pecan Cake. Grandma's recipe is the only fruitcake that I've ever liked. Seriously, it's good.
Co worker gifts this year will be Poppy Seed Bread loaves made using a butter pecan cake mix, and meringue glazed pecans.
I also want to learn how to make a classic Southern Chess Pie.

Hummingbird Cake is really easy, but it presents like it took a long time to make......so you could act like like you went to great pains to make such a fine cake, and then everyone loves you for going the extra mile
