I tossed all of my console systems years ago but I still play some old school games via emulators.
The first Zelda game they made for the SNES, that's still on my list, and I also still play a few others. Zelda was a new beast, it really had a lot of depth for an 8 bit game, I mean Link a decent story, not too original, he was trying to save a princess, not unlike Mario, but no levity really, Mario was loaded with levity. Link was on a pursuit and nothing would stop him...
The more modern Zelda games, they don't have the same charm but that's because games like Skyrim that involve swords and quests just make modern Zelda games look obsolete. But when the first three Zelda games came out, the competition was slim to none, Final Fantasy was around but it just wasn't as fun.

I don't know where to put this question, so what the hell--I'lll put it here.
I was at a second hand bookstore the other day and saw a bunch of kids' books based on the game Five Nights at Freddie's. So then I started wondering--when did they start writing books based on games??
I feel like this has been going on for a while, and I was sleepwalking while it became a thing. 🤔

I feel like this has been going on for a while, and I was sleepwalking while it became a thing. 🤔 Book wise, the first one I saw was Resident Evil in 1998 when they turned the game series into a series of novels that took place in between the game stories. Comic book wise, long before that.

But Like With Halo...There a Ton Of Novels About Stories from That Universe That Dont Even Have To Do With The Games lol.

I know there are a ton of games based on characters from books and comics--but what I'm curious about is when the inspiration works the other way around. I didn't realize that it was so popular for authors to write novelizations of video game worlds. When I try to look up more info on this, I get some very confusing lists that include games based on books. But what I'm really looking for is a chronological list of books based on games.
If anyone knows of a list like that, please point me in the right direction---I should stop my search now because I'm getting more & more confused.

There is no way to give you an exact year but its been popular since at least 1998, after Resident Evil 2 came out and people loved the story so much, Capcom realized they should write novels that pick up where the game left off. To be clear, I'm not saying the Resident Evil games are based on the novels, I'm saying the novels are based on the games. So 1998 is when it got popular and after the Resident Evil books did very well, Eidos figured they may as well write books about Lara Croft based on the stories in the games. Its a marketing thing to try to get x'ers, y'ers, and z'ers back into reading again since they love video games, so they figure books based on those video games will work, it isn't really. There's some interest but boomers are keeping book sales alive for now, once they're gone, I dunno.

I asked one of my sons about this (he's 29) and he reminded me that he even had short chapter books based on Pac-man when he was little.

Thank you--yep, late 90's sounds right to me. I asked one of my sons about this (he's 29) and he reminded me that he even had short chapter books based on Pac-man when he was little. They tried to pull it off in the 80's but it didn't work so they stopped, so I'm going with 98 because at that point it did work. But it still is all due to Pac-Man, it was the game that really got a lot of people to realize games just weren't for kids and many adults enjoyed Pac-Man which lead to games getting more in depth, more gritty, and becoming what they are today. Pac-Man will always be a fave.. but the original game... the newer versions are fun but the magic isn't the same..
