I was rereading the Thanksgiving thread this morning and how it got into the topic of karaoke... got me thinking about a stupid public karaoke experience of mine.
Several years ago a friend of mine, who was a retired Air Force lifer, became a karaoke DJ to supplement his income and for fun. He asked me to come one Saturday evening to the Comfort Suites he was DJ’ing at to see him in action. I foolishly agreed.
The drinks were going down a little too easily. He started up a contest for a gift card on who could get the most audience participation while performing a song. I wanted no part of it, but he put me on the list without my knowledge and picked Gary Glitter's “Rock and Roll, Part 2” knowing it would be the only song I'd even consider doing.
Drinking and a contest are never a good idea with me.
So I got up, determined to win at any cost, and made an announcement that I'd buy every women in the audience a beer if they’d join me up on the stage and help me out... and the only words they needed to know for the song were "Hey" and "Huh." To my surprise about 20 women came up and joined me.
It also coincided with the Celtic Classic Highland Games that were being held in an area across the street and the Comfort Suites was loaded with participants from Scotland and Ireland who were staying there.
What a scene! Most of the women obviously had quite a bit to drink also. They were dancing and laughing and singing up on stage with me, acting like I was some was some Rock'n'Roll front man and they were groupies. In addition, a bunch of big husky European guys in kilts went over to the dance floor, with pints in hand, and started doing jigs to the song. The scene on the stage and the dance floor was hysterical and everyone in the audience were laughing their asses off. I couldn't stop laughing throughout the song and was lucky to have the ladies up there to help me out with the "singing."
Well, I won the contest and received a $20 gift card for gasoline, but the damn thing cost me about $120 in drinks plus tip. My friend still talks about that evening to this day.
That just ain't right!
