....names of places and character/ characters will be determined spontaneously by whoever the first writer is going to be. ๐ That's my understanding, at least. ๐
But thanks for the extraneous and superfluous interesting information though! A "yes, there is a Stillwater,Ok.!" Would have sufficed to satisfy the curious. ๐๐ Brevity may be the key to good communication, but with me you get run-amockness... and eggroll. ๐ Lol, I know you've been really busy Dio! ๐ Just tagging you to remind you to get in here and catch up reading, when you can. ๐

I like ghost/haunted theme. Otherwise i prefer third person. So i would vote for that. Small town setting has my vote. I think in the US would be easiest since most writers are from the US. I think it should be an imaginary town. Personally i think that name and location in the US should be up to the first writer who ever that might be.
Oh, and by the way, Stillwater, wasn't that the name of that town were Gibbs from NCIS were born? I vaguely remember that. Is that a sort of homage to the TV-series?? I'm definitely agreeing with 3rd person. And I'm flexible as all get out on everything else. ๐ ....not sure, but I think there may actually be a Stillwater , Oklahoma. Maybe DIOnysius, I mean diobolic , will know. He's gots lots of crazy useful useless info stored up in that big brain. ๐๐

No doubt there is a Stillwater in the US. The name just came to me, out of the blue, as it were. We can qualify it more, as in Stillwater Falls. A small town, in the Midwest, but not backward in any sense. Quaint, I believe the word is. The ghost comes from this town. {Spoiler}By the way, I know who the ghost is.

I hope the story will have a couple of kids too. I've noticed that SK does kids better than almost anyone else; consider Jake from The Dark Tower.

Kids are nice. (My wife and I had two.) As I envision the story, a pair of fraternal twins at the beginning. Later, siblings: a boy and a girl.

I've been meaning to ask. How horrific are we allowed to get in this story? Plain old-fashioned terror, or can we gross-out a bit.

Hey all, great discussion going on. Right now, I am hearing small town, name to be decided by first writer but Stillwater has been mentioned by a few. (@kurben - lots of small US towns have the same name. That used to be a recurring joke on the Simpsons, which is set in Springfield, but we're never told what state1 )
prufrock21 - Some gore is fine, even encouraged, but I would say just keep things PG, please.
mary - yes! SK does a great job with kids! If it comes your time to write and no one has introduced them, go ahead and put some in! applouse

Seems like we're leaning towards third person too, right? At least i have read some saying they prefer that and noone saying first yet. But all have not uttered an opinion on that yet.

If the majority want third person I am fine with that. My favorite writer does an excellent job incorporating first person into many have his stories. I personally enjoy that aspect but I will abide by what is decided... Probably

The story definitely needs more cowbell. I can write cowbell into my segment... correct? "Somewhere in the distance a lone cowbell rang through the night."
(I know... off to the Penalty Box with thee)

(I know... off to the Penalty Box with thee) You know the way, Dio....and how to do your walk of shamelessness.....I'm busy! Go put yourself in there, bub. ๐๐
I myself am fine with ghost/ haunting story (cowbell included or not) And I really think 3rd person is best (for me ๐) I'm cool with small town too, if that's where we're going.
Query: with "ghost/ haunting" ....are we still talking about " haunted house" here to?
(.....I'm still working today, but I'm around and looking in here, when I can. Hope everyone is having a great day. ๐)

wolf - I am trying not to force everyone to write inside a haunted house. If the first writer begins in a house, the others have the option of going across town if needed to further the story, then ultimately they can bring it back home before the end if that "feels" right.
I am new at this, folks, so if I am being too loose and you would prefer I just say "Do it this way!" - please let me know!

After reading the posts, I suggest the following particulars (to add to or subtract as you please):
1. To write a short story, as opposed to a novella or other work. 2. The genre is horror, with a PG rating. Some gore OK. ( I suppose this precludes the f-word and the gross-out.) 3. The setting should be a small town, perhaps in the Midwest. I suggested Stillwater Falls as a possible name. 4. Being a ghost story, there should be a ghost and a house, preferably haunted. 5. I prefer that the ghost should be "good" as opposed to "evil." We can make the antagonist and evil human, for example, or an evil entity of some kind. 6. There should be a child or children in the story. 7. To make it challenging, there might be a crime or crimes (murder, kidnapping), which would involved the police. 8. The ending can be happy or sad or inconclusive, though I prefer a happy ending. 9. We dedicate the story to Mr. King. 10. I have a working title but will wait for other suggestions. 11. Third person narrative, if you please.
