It reminds me of my wife and I. Same little town all these years later. Children gone. So many friends and neighbors gone. Mr. Wade who played his guitar and Miss Sally who came to our campfires and lived in the house down the road that my cousin and I used to visit for candy when I was a kid. We traded flowers to the old lady who lived there then. She is gone. They are gone. The house itself is gone, burned in a fire one night when abandoned after everyone had long gone.
I remember the last time I helped him. It was after a winter storm as in the song. He had slid off the sharp curve in front of my house, so I got my bar and chain, and we got him out. I hadn't realized he was getting so frail till then. Ever afterward Rena would make meals for them and put their needs on a list for me to get my next time out. Sometimes we delivered the meals and stayed to eat with them. I would have to help him from bed to the table. We had some good conversations about his days working the railroad in California. At the time it seemed a minor inconvenience. Now I realize it was a pleasure.
It's comforting to age together as a couple even when everything else is falling away. I'm glad we stayed.
