How do you organize your books? Or maybe I should ask, DO YOU organize your books??
I have a feeling that my books seem organized to me, but to anyone else, they'd look like chaos. And I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should fix that or leave well enough alone. bqoSoRxYPsUMmOVwFRVS

I started organizing and cataloging my SK collection a few years ago. By date of publication. Mostly just the hardcovers. Now it's a mess all over again because I had to move them into a different room.
I need to finish that project, then move on to my Joe Hill books. The non-King family books are pretty much stacked around everywhere else. As I said elsewhere, it's like an episode of Hoarders in here.

I feel like it's a major accomplishment if I can keep all the books by the same author in one room...or the same subject, for that matter. I'm trying....really, I am. Here's an example of how screwed up my system is---I have a lot of books about the band Kiss. For some reason, I can't get myself to put 'em all in one room. I have "Living room Kiss books", "bedroom Kiss books" (believe me, they're not what you're thinking), "back room Kiss books" and I just recently started a new thing called "Office Kiss books". It's ridiculous, but I feel like they can't all be together and I don't know why. I did put all the Star Trek books together a few years ago and it was life-changing!

I have ... Carnival of Souls. Where would this one live, Wicked Esther ? The kitchen? Wait...whaaa? Are we talking about CDs? Oh Lord...I'm even worse with those. Also--I just noticed a forgotten category "Desk Kiss books"--these are the ones I keep telling myself I'll read "someday" (LIES!!) .

And I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should fix that or leave well enough alone. I have a floor to wall bookcase about five feet wide. Just a huge thing. But I have my books like this: Fiction first, by author. Then music related books, then true crime, then biographies. Then, on the bottom, I have big books like the KISS Kompendium and KISStory.

Oh wow, that takes serious organizational skills. Do you just get rid of books when that bookcase gets full? That’s part of my problem...I find it hard to part with old books.

Contrary to the image I painted, I don't have the thing filled. About 3/4. I'd say once every six months I'll stand before the beast and analyze each title to decide if this is a book I plan on reading again and again and if I can do without it. If it sparks joy and continues to do so, it stays. Some books are never going anywhere (The King Classics, for example) Those books I gave you are prime examples of books I enjoyed reading once but could never see reading again.

Do you trade books in to places like Half Price Books? I trade books in for credit at 3 different places and I’m thinking I should designate a shelf for those books that I plan to take in. I’m sitting in a room with 6 tall bookcases, stuffed to the point that there are books jammed in horizontally on top of the ones that are nicely lined up on the shelves. This “book shoving” ,as I call it, is a serious pet peeve of mine!🤬 I put ‘em away every so often, but then this keeps happening again and again...😫

But, what can ya do. I haven't been there since this world turned into a petrie dish. I might venture out there some evening when the fewest people are out. I almost feel sorry for the books that are being "shoved". LOL "What," they sniff sadly. "Am I not good enough to be set up vertically like the others?"

It’s borderline criminal .... completely inexcusable and this injustice must end! ( I just “shoved” two more books ...sickening misconduct on my part!) Half Price books doesn’t give good trade amounts here either. We have a place called Zia that’s a little bit better, and another one called Bookman’s that’s the most generous with trade, but also has the highest prices.

You know, I'm legit worried about these bookstores during these "Unprecedented Times". I have this fear that my HPB will shut down because of this. Permanently. Thinking about it makes me feel legitimately depressed. We don't have any other used places around my neck of the woods.

We may be facing a second “ stay at home” order here in AZ soon if covid numbers keep going up,and it’s a big concern that some local businesses won’t being able to survive. When everything shut down in April, I used the curbside service at Zia, and it was pretty cool. Order and pay online, call when you get to the store and they bring your items out to your car. Very efficient. HPB and Bookman’s weren’t equipped to offer anything like that. I hope these places are preparing to handle curbside business just in case ...otherwise Amazon is going to put all the little guys out of business.

At this point, Wisconsin is not too out of control for Covid cases. No talk yet of another stay at home. I still worry, though. The book store I worked at for over 20 years went belly up in early 2018 because of mismanagement and people who decided Amazon was more important than supporting their local businesses.

Great thread! @wicked Esther!
I'm not organized with my books at all - other than they are all on shelves - but I have some on the kitchen shelves, I have 4 living room bookshelves, 2 in the bedroom and 1 in the dining room. I have 2 points of organization: my SK books are all on the bedroom shelf - the top 4 shelves. And all of my short story collections are downstairs.
Over on the SKMB years ago we had a "Bookshelfies" thread - like a "Selfie" thread, but with our bookshelves.
I'll see if I can find pic of one.

Oh that would be awesome--I'd love to see those pics if you can find them! Thanks for looking. Your house sounds a bit like mine--bookcases everywhere but the bathrooms.

I use my bookshelves past the full capacity. Then the overflow to nearby tables, chairs and some get stacked on the floor. Don't get me started on comic book storage- because that's a problem too.
