All the ones in my area have not opened this year. Have they in your area? I was so looking forward to fresh tomatoes, and squash, and sugar baby watermelons.

Sadly, MaryPeg, we don't really have stands around here anymore. We do have a local Farmer's Market - but sometimes it's pretty disappointing. I haven't had a good tomato yet this year from anywhere. It was kind of a late spring/summer so I'm hopeful that August might bring better fare. I love a sugar baby. They are so good! Haven't seen one yet this year though.

I hope the one near us opens before the end of the season. I miss those big delicious tomatoes!

We have a Farmer's Market too. I've never seen a produce stand. There are people who sell corn out of the back of their pickups, does that count?

Okay - so I did not know what a sugar baby was. Thought I would Google it. Do not do that - all this weird stuff comes up about sugar daddies and sugar babies.
Now I am guessing it is a type of watermelon?
😲
Ha! I found a place with Emojis

We have two farmers markets that are usually well stocked. I agree with HollyGolightly, this August will be the best time to get fresh corn, watermelons, string beans, and honey. There's a guy in an old blue pickup that parks at the crossroads and sits under an umbrella waving at people. This week he had baskets of peaches and tomatoes. My grandfather usually grows cucumbers and peppers in his back yard.

We call it a produce stand, but I guess it could be called farmer's market also.
They have all kinds of fruits, and vegetables for sale out of people's gardens.
A sugar baby is a watermelon. It is sweeter than a regular melon. It is round also.

My grandfather usually grows cucumbers and peppers in his back yard. This is not directly related to Farmer's Markets but it is plant related. Today at the Living Prairie Museum they had an event on where you could go there to learn about Monarch butterflies.
They also had milkweed plants available to be given away for free.
I could not make it there so I just phoned them (they were closing in 15 minutes) and got through to a lovely lady named Kelly.
They had about four plants left so they are putting one aside for me that I can pick up tomorrow!
I plan to plant it in my garden and hopefully it will stay alive. You can also propagate more from the seeds once the pods go to seed. Hopefully, once I have a few established, that will attract Monarch butterflies to the yard - their natural habitat is dying out so every little bit helps.

My mom planted one of those too.

My mom planted one of those too. I'm happy to report that my swamp milkweed is still alive - I planted it in a clay pot and left it on the deck. Looks like Davy Jones was watering that as well as the tomatoes!

Peaches grow here in the Valley and you are right, the best place to get them is at the roadside stands or the Farmers Market. Its been so dry here this summer it has been hard on the fruit crops and prices have been high. Looked at local peaches at the grocery store tonight and they were
over 3 dollars a pound.Did get some nice baby beets.

I think Georgia and Alabama and South Carolina are the three largest peach producing states, but I'm not sure. I live close to several peach orchards so they're cheap and easy to come by. Sometimes I make peach cobbler using the canned peaches and it is just as delicious. The kitchen fills up with that warm cinnamon peach smell. Easy to make. I've never had beets. Need to try.

Try doing them this way. Peel and cut up into med size cubes, Toss in vegetable or canola oil and salt and pepper. Put them in a greased casserole and put lid on. Place in 350degF oven for 30 to 40 minutes (test with fork) then serve. Just heard about doing them this way and they are delicious.

Thank you for the tip. I'll try to remember. Sounds kind of like how I'd prepare roasted cubed potatoes or some roasted veggie, same idea. Mmm.

Has anyone else been frequenting the farmer's market or produce stand? pegasus216 You get any more melons? Didn't you buy some nectarines or peaches, too? Can't remember.
This week a friend is bringing me a box full of stuff. I'll probably have to freeze some of it. I'll post what items he brings Monday.

I go to the produce stand once a week. They don't have any more plums though. I got some squash, and Zucchi, and more melons, and corn.

We don't have many of them around here anymore. And the ones you can find don't seem to have anything better than the grocery store. I used to be able to get good Georgia peaches when they were in season at produce stands but I haven't seen any for a few years. You can find peaches called Georgia peaches but they are not the Georgia peaches I remember. I think someone is lying.

I live in the countryside of northeast Pennsylvania. There are produce stands everywhere as we have lots of farms. And it seems every gardening enthusiast has a little produce table set up in their front yards. Nobody ever man's them. You park in their driveways, pick what you want, and put money into a box on the table. Everything is on the honor system. The best fruits and vegetables come from my neighbor's back yards... so ripe and delicious. I've stopped growing a variety of veggies except for peppers (my specialty) an a few others , as I can get much better tasting veggies than I grow myself for next to nothing from neighbors. One of these years I'll have to set up one of those tables with a big variety of home grown hot peppers... gotta fit in.
