Since we have a bunch of nature folks, here, I am starting a tree thread. What is unique to your area? Have any favorites?
During Alabama winters the woodland hills get dark and sodden and, of course, leafless. One exception is the beech tree (not to be confused with birch trees). Instead of falling off, their leaves grow pale until spring revives their green again. Last week, the warm morning created a light ground mist and as I crossed the railroad tracks it lifted and seemed to bring the embracing hills much closer. The dark thick bars of pines and oaks widened as I drove and the light cream leaves of the dwarfish beech trees were bright as lantern beams. I was forced to put my eyes back on the road; they were so ethereal in the morning gloom. The color of their scant foliage is like a soft peachy facial powder that one's grandmother might apply to her cheeks. Against the canvas of gray and brown and dark mud, the beech tree chooses this season to grab a Southerner's attention.

When I was in Coos County, New Hampshire I took several pics of birch trees (and many covered bridges). I bought some maple syrup, too. I think my favorite tree in New England is the hemlock tree. I think that's the name of it. You guys have a bunch of fragrant trees and beautiful hardwoods. I want to spend more time hiking when I go back.

Your writing Doc, puts the reader right there, seeing it with you. I think you missed your calling, Doc. You should b a Print Journalist, at the very least. Your talent goes far above that I think.
Thank you for a few moments of escape to a peaceful setting.
