Are there books you don't remember reading? (Heck, there are even threads I don't remember making...so hopefully this one isn't redundant.) I cannot remember a single thing about Case Histories by Kate Atkinson, but I know I read it years ago. I've heard of people getting halfway through a book and saying, "Wait a minute! I've read this before!". Are you one of those people? I also read Darkfall by Dean Koontz but have only a vague memory of its plot. Let me see what other books I don't remember reading. If this has happened to you, list some just for fun. hollygolightly wireman

This thread totally made me laugh-- a good one too!!! I call it CRS and blame it on old age. But I must admit, have always had issue with short term memory. Books- Well I just re read Outsiders- why cause I knew the plot. t he details, but by golly had no idea the who did it or why!
When answering questions about a certain book, I often need to just skim thru to "remember". Yet there are book that stay with me forever.
I do not think you are alone,Doc.
**** by the way, how are you feeling?

**** by the way, how are you feeling? LOL...I have revisited older King books because the details were fuzzy, but that Atkinson book I mentioned is a total blank! I know what you mean about short term memory. When we did The Stand group discussion I still had to flip through it again to refresh myself. Heh. I slept better last night and less pain today; thanks for asking. I told Neesy I will open a PM on SKMB for any major changes or updates. I'll be sure to include you.

A few years ago (2011 I believe), I started keeping a list of the books I read on an excel spreadsheet that I made. I put the title, have a space for a short comment and I rate the book from 1-10. I read 25-35 books a year. Now that the list is 8 years old, it's frightening how many I don't remember. Usually, if I read a brief synopsis, it will come back to me. When I look at that long list, I can tell which books made an impact on me on which ones didn't. If I don't remember it, it's probably not worth re reading.
.... I'm pulling up my list now and will look at 2011 .... Now that I see the list, I see that I started it in 2010, not 2011.
There are a lot of Dean Koontz books I don't remember. I actually enjoy reading many of those books but they don't stick with me for whatever reason.
I'm looking at 2011 and there are 4 or 5 I don't remember but they are by authors I don't know. These were probably freebie kindle reads. I think I got my first kindle in 2011 and I loaded up some free stuff.
I remember all of the Stephen King books except Rose Madder. I don't remember disliking it but it obviously didn't make much of an impression. If he can't remember writing one of his books then I can be forgiven for not remembering reading one.

Yeah, Joe, that's exactly what I mean. What a great idea- the spreadsheet. Not sure why I haven't done that before now. (I'm notorious for making lists and ranking things, as is evident on SKMB. ) I think Koontz's books often run together for me because so many are similar, plus I read the bulk of them in (cough) highschool. LOL Oh...just thought of another book I barely remember (not amnesia, technically): The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. Conversely, there are children books that were read to me in elementary school which I can recall in great detail.
Thanks for responding. Hope you've lit up your palm tree down in Duma Key.

I don't mean it as a knock against Dean but I read his books when I'm traveling or in waiting room etc because he's easy to read. If I'm going to get on a plane or read in some other crowded place, I often pick him because he's easy to read. I find it easier to read him with all of the distractions of reading in a crowd of people. Does that make sense? Maybe that's why I have a hard time remembering his novels.

Great thread, doccreed ! Yes - Case Histories might be one of them - I read the trilogy - at least it was a trilogy at the time I read it (I think) - library days. I don't remember a thing about it. My friend, Hilda, was trying to remember the herbal remedy she had been taking to help her memory, so she could tell me what to buy. Sadly, she ran out, forgot what it was, and we're both still lost. We just went out for drinks so we don't have to worry about it. My short term memory is comical. Ask me about Christmas 1976, I can tell you everything. What I read this year - crickets.

I forget a lot of books. The fact books i often remember but there are a lot of meh crime novels, sf novels and horror novels that i read and often find entertaining while it goes on but have difficulties remembering. Koontz are one author, not that i exactly forget more like mix up storylines in different books. I admit it, i'm no big fan of him hes enjyable but hes also forgetable. Kings books i very seldom forget though i might forget a subplot in a story but never the main plot. Also Bentley Little, at least some of his stories. Hes enjoyable but i often forget which story goes with which title. They are all named the something.

Similar to book amnesia, but not exactly the same.... Have you ever re-read a book and realized that it's different from what you thought you remembered? I read We Have Always Lived In the Castle by Shirley Jackson when I was 14. I loved it, but it was the school's copy, so I couldn't keep the book. I never got my own copy until about a year ago. I re-read it and WHOA!!! My 14 year old brain and my 53 year old brain don't see things the same way at all. I still enjoyed the book. In fact, I can say I still loved it--but the characters and main events of the story were not the way I thought I remembered them all these years.
