Alright, I see....I was thinking that the Lesser Red Panda was directly related to the Great Panda, a subspecies or something. Can't remember where I read that. I must have misread or misremembered. Thanks for the clarification Kurben, it's interesting. Appreciate you. 🙂 It has been a long standing debate in biological community about the two panda species and how they are related to other families. Scientists have wavered back and forth between Bears and Weasels. But in later decades with DNA research and molecular studies done on them it is now clear that they arent related at all. The Giant Panda, together with the Spectacled Bear are the oldest, now living, bear species. The other 6 living species are Asian and American Black Bear, Polar Bear, Brown Bear, Sloth Bear (Baloo in the jungle book is a Sloth Bear) and Sun Bear and they are much more closely related to eachother than to the other two. THAT is so interesting. Wow, never knew the Giant Panda was one of the oldest. I kind of thought they might have been a later bear species to come along, with those distinctive black and white markings. And that maybe their colors were so drastic in contrast due to something in their environment that led them to adapting that way. Just pure guessing and speculation on my part there.
It has always kinda fascinated me how the North American black bear and the polar bear look a little similar. Not in size or color, of course. But I mean their general shape (not counting those big snow shoe paws the polar bears have) . Their heads in particular look shaped much the same, quite different from brown bears, grizzlies and kodiaks...I think so at least, don't know if other people see it. Maybe it's just me.🙂

The Brown Bear is very widely spread across the globe and different subspecies exist from Norway in the east across Asia and into Alaska, Canada and Northern US. There even exist a subspecies in the Gobi desert and as far south as Italy and there is a syrian brown bear too. Grizzlies and Kodiaks are the two most common subspecies in north america.
