I've go to see it now. With Alec Guinness in it, and all your clues I know it's great. I saw a newer one the other day that was pretty good (on hulu) :"The Limehouse Golem". Bill Nighy, and Eddie Marsden were in the cast. Cool surprise ending!

I don't know the names of the actors either, all were French. I saw it on TCM (Turner Classic Movies channel) don't know if you get that over there. Great acting, wonderful sets! And riveting story. I loved it.
