It's superb, in my top three of all time.
I saw a newer one the other day that was pretty good (on hulu) :"The Limehouse Golem".

The title does sound very familiar, maybe I've seen it once long ago and just have forgotten it. I've go to see it now. With Alec Guinness in it, and all your clues I know it's great.

Yes! I've been trying to get my boy to see "Strange Fruit" for ages, he's going to love that one when he see's it. Great cast there too.
