Every other commercial on TV is for some kind of pill, or medicine.
Do you think we take to many pills in this country? I do. Every time I get a pain, my nurse wants me to pop one pill or another, or do my morphine. I usually don't do it. I hate having to take pills.

Yes, in general I think it is a pill popping society. I think the blame can be put on the medical society for a good percentage of it too. Not sure if any other country is like this, but in Canada a physician gets a percentage of the profit from each prescription he writes. Each pharmacy offers a different percentage to the physician to attract more business. If a doctor suggests a particular pharmacy, chances are it gives the highest percentage to him/her. Seniors, unfortunately, have the highest number of prescriptions to take. Sometimes I think it is a band aid solution to avoid high cost procedures/tests.

The real problem with overuse of antibiotics, especially when they’re perscribed to help with something they won’t affect like a virus, is creating super resistant diseases.

I agree. I'm not much of a medicine taker - but when you need it, definitely take it. There is the problem. If I have a sore throat, I try apple cider vinegar first, then Tylenol, then cold medicine, if it lingers more than a week, I'll go see a dr. But there was a time when I needed medicine and refused it for a long time. I didn't do anyone any favors with that. If you need it, take it. I have a pharmacist friend who KNOWS BETTER but she's got a counter top covered in meds. Is she really that ill? I don't know. But once you're on all that, it's hard to come off of it. None of her stuff is self prescribed, but she's got many, many ailments and sometimes I think she just needs to eat better, get some exercise and good sleep, take a vitamin. Pills are easier. I hope you're well, pegasus216 Your birthday was the day I was supposed to have my son. He was born on Feb 8th though - thank God! I couldn't have carried him 8 more days - he was a 9 pounder.

That was a big baby, Holly!!
It just seems that if your finger hurts, people run for the pills.
My mother had to take different kinds of pills, and it cost her having to have part of her stomach removed because it caused an ulcer. The pills weren't mixing together .

- this is so true - I am a strong believer in preventative medicine.
The only thing I worry about with taking so many pills is something called "polypharmacy" - as people get older they get prescribed more and more medications and some of these drugs interact with others.
Plus my parents used to keep their drugs around a long time, never paying attention to expiry dates. (Their generation did not like to waste anything, especially my Dad who lived through the Depression in the 30s).

Never mind. Found CBC articles last year. (Recent And legitimate.)
But, doesn’t appear as cut & dried as just a direct payment.

I must say that I am very thankful for the hydrochlorothiazide that I was prescribed. One day I forgot to take it in the morning and my right leg swelled right up.
It seems to have gone from the ankle to the calf and now it's in my thigh.
This Thursday the 29th I see my regular doctor so hopefully will get a proper diagnosis.

My doctor told me this not to long ago. How it came up was he was encouraging me to use the Pharmacy next to his office and when I asked him why that is what he told me.
Only know because I was told that, Frank.

Sorry my question came out offensive. I originally assumed it came from an anti-science site. I did make a second post stating I found a news article confirming what you posted. again, sorry I offended you.

Just wondering how many people would be dead already if it wasn't for the advances in medicine that have been made in the last 50 years.
It would be great if no one needed any kind of pills, but it does seem to extend the life of many who need those drugs.

Ironic, there are people who use antibiotics when they have viruses and then there are the people who are dumb enough not to vaccinate their children or themselves at all. Anti-vaxxers are the worst of all, they’re so selfish. They deny scientific proof over some random article from the 15th page of a google search. Even if vaccines did somehow cause autism, having autism would be preferable to dying at an early age due to some horrible disease.

I actually looked at the “vaccine injuries”. They are self-reported. (No evidence required.) And they include the MOST ridiculous claims.~~ Child was vaccinated. Within a week child was hit by car and died. Equals vaccine injured. ~~Child was vaccinated. Slept in bed with parents. Father rolled on top of child. Child smothered and died. Equals vaccine injured.~~ Seriously. Those are two that jumped out at me.

Annemarie~It sounds like the parents were just trying to get money out of their child's death. That is such a shame.
