(Can anyone tell me what story the cover of Nightmares and Dreamscapes is from? The 1st edition one with the scarecrow guy in the road)

What are some of your favorite King short stories? (Can anyone tell me what story the cover of Nightmares and Dreamscapes is from? The 1st edition one with the scarecrow guy in the road) "Graduation Day Afternoon" "One For The Road" "Last Rung On The Ladder" "The Reach" "Uncle Otto's Truck" "Graveyard Shift" "That Feeling You Can Only Say What It Is In French" "Survivor Type" "Batman and Robin Have an Altercation" "Strawberry Spring"
I could be here for two hours. This is an extemporaneous list and I'm sure it'd change if I was thumbing through the contents of all his collections. Some are literary, some are wickedly humorous, some are startling and delightful in the way a vanishing coin trick is to a six year old. I've come to respect the way he boldly drags back from the ether such a bevy and variety of stories like a hunting dog with a duck in its jaws. I've said it before- I'm impressed with his blue collar work ethic and fearlessness in trusting what a story wants to be.
Night Shift and Skeleton Crew will always be my favorite collections, I think.

Are you wanting to know if the art on the cover represents a particular story within that collection?

Panda, which King story collections haven't you read? What are your favorite stories so far? Here are a couple more I like:
"The Wedding Gig" (a non-horror and atmospheric tale)
"The Reaper's Image" (goosebumps)
"Dolan's Cadillac"

I started to watch and FB cut me off-- NOt a member/ I got as far as Gerald's Game, how he found a bedpost someplace and wow is he an artist-- then made a clay model of the top part. Had one of two lovers, but publisher said no. Did sketches one with a window, and Steve said no window, so the bed post won. He does sketched on tissue paper and takes photos of things in real life that interest him and these becomes the basis for many book cover. I wonder of there is a way to see the video with being on FB-- what I saw amazed me.

Did it show the alternate window sketch for Gerald's Game? I think the existing version with the woman carved into the bed post with the dangling handcuffs is perfect. When I tried to view video it said LOGIN or CREATE ACCOUNT. Thanks again for taking the time to share the details.

I especially enjoy hearing for the artist himself why he drew what he did. I'll try to find a way to get that video. Got same message as you did.
Thought............ I wonder if I asked Marsha if there was a way to put that link in SK twitter page- or even a way for SK MB ( Jordan?) It is so interesting and discusses 5 covers in all. Probablysome legal reason no can do- but I'll try to ask.

We can't be the only fans who'd like to see all his drawings and the backstory to each one. Very cool!

Then again - maybe the same thing will happen as before - I went to the video, right clicked and chose "copy video URL" then did Control C to copy and Control V to paste
Let me know if it works!
Shoot - now that I'm looking at the URL, it does look exactly like the other one facepalm

I'm watching it now. Thanks, Neesy! I guess I should have ignored the LOGIN and SIGN UP at the bottom and just pressed play, because it's playing fine.

It works, like doc said, just ignore the prompt. I think Dana Jean would appreciate this link, as she is always interested in the artist.

Breece D'J Pancake took his own life with a shotgun forty years ago this April. He described himself as having "something ancient in {his} soul", and I think this is evident in his writing and in his characters. His writing is unflinchingly brutal and often bleak, but there is something life affirming in his masterful prose. Like Flannery O'Conner and Eudora Welty and Ernest Hemingway, his stories are haunting because of his surgical precision and his hidden sutures: these writers call to the heart not by the art of showing, but by how much they don't reveal. Pancake, to me, writes with an admirable dexterity and his narratives are measured in brief moments; he finds the moment, the pulsing artery, and with one confident move of the knife he cuts it open. The story I chose for next week, "Time and Again", is a great example of this. His brevity (which his own suicide amplifies) and shortsighted points of view give his stories an immediacy and undeniable claustrophobia. I think he loved his small town life, and his work is not without tenderness, but he seemed to be plagued by an indescribable emptiness, like winter wind in a hollow gourd, that echoes today on every page.
I strongly recommend his short story collection. He has influenced such writers as Joyce Carol Oates, Chuck Palahniuk, and Andre Dubus III.
